I have to say that the most recent release of Ubuntu is the best yet. I had no driver issues, the install was ultra fast, and it performs very well on this lower end machine:
- AMD Sempron LE-1100 (1.9ghz)
- 1GB RAM
- ATI x1650 Pro graphic card
- 40GB Hard Drive
I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 since its release for internet browsing, email, desktop publishing, and some light gaming. It performs all of these tasks very efficiently. Its likely I could completely replace Windows if it weren't for my .NET Development and heavy gaming needs. Oh well... Anyway, after installing Ubuntu, you might be wondering what else you can do with your system. The answer is "What can't you do?" There is no shortage of free software available for Linux systems and the configuration options are endless. I could not do a better job at explaining the possibilities and walking you through them than Danny on his The Silent Number blog. So head over and check out his article; you will be downloading and installing new themes/screensavers, media tools, and games in no time.
